Stressed to Blessed Creates GREATER Stress!
By Yeis Here
Why Does Going From Stressed to Blessed Create GREATER Stress! I've always been one to ask, "Why?" As a small child I paid attention to everything going on around me: people, plants, streams and spent countless hours watching clouds! My natural proclivity for wanting to understand the 'why' of life has led me to witness the strangest of circumstances in the lives of people around me. Now one might wonder what exactly am I getting at? The things that we contemplate in quiet moments always manifests in our lives. Therefor, we must be prepared to live our desires; yearning and sincere desire are extremely powerful forces! This piece is about the phenomenon of seeing people work their way from devastating circumstances only to create greater distress once they reach a relative level of 'success.' This past year I've had the opportunity to work closely with both homeless people and people in recovery from alcohol and drug addiction. I've watched homeless women go from sleeping in the park or jail cell to getting into a shelter, finding employment and upon transitioning into their own living space getting re-involved with the very same people that influenced their original poor choices which led to their homeless status! I've watched recovering men attend meetings, sometimes 3 times per week, to avoid lapsing back into chemical dependence but then use sex and/or womanizing as a crutch that causes just as much damage emotionally to them and their 'playmates' as the chemicals they now shun! Seeing these behavioral patterns brought my 'why-ness' screaming to the forefront. It appeared to me that something was missing in the 'help' process to actually foster deep seated and long lasting healing of whatever emotional factors that led to the initial imbalance. Why is it people can long for 'help' receive it, get on their feet and then return almost fully to the prior state of dysfunction? The psychological medical field states that fear of success is as crippling as fear of failure. So apparently fear is one major agent that causes people to regress and to some extent prevent many from progress. So now the question becomes: What needs to be in place to address the basic fears of those people who've been 'derailed,' so to speak? How can society in general and social agencies in particular reach and then teach people to neutralize their deepest fears? We've all heard stories of million dollar lottery winners that are bankrupt within a year or the heir/heiress that squanders their inheritance that took generations to build. While these are cases on the extreme end, millions of people catch a 'lucky break' only to sabotage themselves and remain in the same circumstance as they've grown accustomed to. Especially those that claim they want things to be better! With the dawning of this new 'millennium' and the advent of better, faster, greater technology and/or science, it seems there is a serious break down when it comes to advancing the human needs of mental and emotional healing. No one wants to suffer. Unless a more in depth investment of resources is made into the only meaningful component of society -- the people -- the phenomena of homelessness, chemical addictions, violent crimes and suicides will continue to rise. As so much is riding on our collective survival, I can only ask 'why' isn't more of a priority given to prevent the "from stressed to blessed creates greater stress" syndrome?
