Follow The Frugal!
Follow the Frugal! At the tender age of 3, I was given an amber colored glass 'doggie' bank! My maternal grandmother carefully instructed and then always reminded me to put my 'change in the bank!' Mind you, back in those days, whenever I'd receive 'change' from the many loving folks that was in our social circle [and of course the many uncles and aunts, etc.] tying my 'change' up in my handkerchief was the equivalent to putting my change in a 'money clip' until I could get home and transfer it to my 'bank!' By the time I was six my 'doggie' bank was quite full – and it actually had several dollars worth of coins in it. My cousins, mostly boys [there is only 1 female cousin to every 4 males born in my family] were in awe of my 'riches' and my family still thinks and acts like I've got mega money 'in the bank!' The natural outgrowth of my being trained so early on to save money was a practical frugality in regards to saving AND spending money. Even though I've always had 'a little change', as a child I carefully counted up the cost of the 'goodies' that I traveled to the store to buy making sure there was more 'change' at the end of my spending than 'goodies.' When in junior high, now called middle school, the ban on girls wearing pants to school was lifted. Now, the school board may have decided it was ok for girls to wear pants to school but my mother did not! However, so as not to have me feel completely like an alien among my peers, my mother gave me permission to buy my own pants to wear to school! Allow me to digress for a moment. . . My wardrobe was a major concern for my mother and of very little significance to me, especially at the age of 14. Remember, my cousins along with my 2 brothers were my closest friends and worrying about clothing and other 'girlie' matters wasn't high on my priority list. Being cleaned, starched and ironed was important, yet what I wore as far as style was concerned did not matter to me at all! Therefor without having a great interest in fashion I had no idea how to choose clothing that would flatter my 'figure'; compliment my 'color' and all the other nuances that wardrobe building entails. As I alluded, fashion was my mother's department and SHE actually enjoyed shopping and dressing herself and her 3 children up to look like queens and kings! Having paid almost no attention to even the size of clothes that she would bring home for me to wear the task of picking out a simple pair of pants to wear to school was a very big deal for me! But the most important part of the 'buy my own pants' mandate was, of course, the money! As the first born there were certain responsibilities that I had to maintain and because I carried those out with obedience and an overall good nature, I received a decent allowance every two weeks! Yet the thought of shopping for myself some pants to wear to school motivated me to seek out 'alternative streams' of income! I took on my first job during that summer working for my music teacher – babysitting of course! I worked 5 days a week, 4 hours a day for the duration of summer school since my teacher taught music during summer school and her husband worked his regular job. My first job was absolutely great, the pay was great [I didn't care about 'minimum wage' at that time] and I earned more than enough money to embark on my first shopping safari. . . Now although shopping wasn't my first nature, I was the granddaughter and daughter of some working class people, so my first choice for shopping was Montgomery Ward; unfortunately there wasn't one in the town we lived at that time. Sears turned out to be the 'emporium' for the great pant purchase after going into different stores in the mall and doing some price comparison. Without any buying experience and no 'personal sales consultant' to confer with I bought a pair of dark brown tweed-like slacks with a beige belt! When school started I was the only girl wearing those pants AND they were a size and a half too large yet I LOVED those pants and by the time I figured out they weren't 'fashionable' I was able to go out and buy a better fit, style and color of pants in keeping with my peers! Some of you might wonder what all of this could possibly have to do with doing business online, entrepreneurship or even finance! Well it has EVERYTHING to do with it: being willing to take on extra work in order to be able to make special purchases, having a thrifty attitude and wanting the most for the money, combined with the patience to shop around for the best provider has earned me respect from most who know me as a 'savvy shopper' and as a 'frugal' person to all that I know. Exploring passive income opportunities; ways to promote online business; which programs are the most beneficial all fall under my life long skill set of putting my 'change in the bank' – I still work towards saving any and all surplus, spending with an eye towards getting the best product at the best price and doing business with those that have integrity in their goods and services as well as their pricing! For anyone looking to become self-employed and for those already employed needing some financial tips, even for those of you that simply want to see more of your money at the end of the day, Follow The Frugal!
