Being Self-Employed: Webhosting with a catch!
Browsing around for web hosting features and rates [to recommend to those new to WebPreneurism] to compare to those that I offer and/or advise that are free I cam across a site that immediately caught my attention: their 'catch' phrase was “unlimited” as in disk space, bandwidth email accounts, subdomains, etc. along with 'free' as in domain and WHOIS domain privacy registration. All of this for only $5.95! Plus all of the 'bells and whistles' that web designer/site owners look for; PHP, MSQL, PERL, Linux, Ruby on Rails along with SSL, QuickTime and HTTP streaming, One-Click automated software installers and much more! I was calculating non-stop as to which of my domains [if any] that I might be willing to transfer and which upcoming projects would be suited for this service. . . Then I scrolled down to the bottom of the page [my 'Queen of the Fine Print Readers' habitualism] and found the caveat: “$5.95 per month paid 10 years in advance. . .” WOW that's what, $720.00! Kinda steep for a newbie and or for someone that's on a shoe string budget.. . The yearly month-to-month cost is $10.95 with an additional $49.95 set up fee which isn't bad per se, but the going rate these days is from $4.95 to $7.95. Since this isn't about mud-slinging, I'm not going to mention the name of the site – apparently they've been around for quite some time and come highly recommended by several more experience bloggers than myself. However, if a hosting company is boasting so many perks and bonuses on their 'splash' or 'landing' page just as to lure you in, I have serious concerns regarding their integrity with which to service the account in a timely manner when needed. . . While I suspect that the only way to get the absolute greatest web hosting package is to man your own server, these sites offer the next best thing – including the peace of mind that comes from not having to watch your server 'back door' for intrusions [aka, hackers] 24/7 when you're not even an IT specialist!
