Being Self-Employed: Embracing Technical Change

Face it, change is inevitable. Faster, better, cheaper and other such reasons to accommodate an ever whirling consumer and technological landscape serve to keep us all on alert that no matter how comfortable we are with what we know, we're always 'pushed' to learn something 'new!'

Recently we've all been made aware that the nation's television broadcasts will go 'digital' by February, 2009. In fact the city of Wilmington, North Carolina became the first to go digital in the nation – nearly 6 months ahead of the congressionaly mandated implementation date. According to a CNN article, “'Digital-only' TV in Wilmington, N. Carolina” the impact upon the households (5%) with analog only television sets has been minimal and doesn't afford a good forecast as to how the rest of the nation's television markets will fare with the mandated conversion.

Digital TV is just following the trend of other arenas such as the job market and enterprise as we know it. Just under 40 years ago the industrial age afforded basic education citizens with jobs in the auto, rail, communications and construction industries. While construction is still alive and well here in the 'States' the other labor intensive industries have dwindled considerably – and most require at least an AA degree to even have an application considered.

At one time the internet was the exclusive domain for government agencies and universities and colleges. Those days are long gone as the world wide web is now synonymous with 'connection' in our ever digital communication age. Cell phones have long been equipped with email capacity and there are millions of families that maintain photo albums online for those members that live anywhere in the world to view and share. Now the internet has become THE place for the major brick-and-mortar mega stores to do business along with digital millionaire ventures such as eBay and Amazon.

While most of our youth are being introduced to computer usage as early as first grade it appears that the connection between eCommerce and job preparation have yet to be made in the public school systems across the land. Further, most job seekers still look to finding employment in businesses that they can travel to, clock into and accomplish their job descriptive tasks on the premises. It is still 'trendy' for people to seek 'telecommute' jobs or even to purposefully turn to the internet for self-employment. However, just like the mandated change from analog to digital TV, earning a living online will soon become the norm. It's just a matter of time before the majority of the workforce will be 'telecommuting' and/or working for self via a computer.

Now is the time for all prudent minded people to investigate income generating vehicles via the internet: sales, consulting, virtual assistance and an endless variety of opportunities abound or are just waiting to be created!

There's nothing better than being prepared for foreseeable change AND laying the groundwork to be on the forefront in order to benefit from inevitable change. Seeing that there is a 'wall' isn't nearly as empowering as being able to read the 'writing' ON the wall!

Ride the waves of the future and investigate sound eCommerce mechanisms – then sit back and watch your digital TV while others scramble for a converter box.
